Thanks to the advances in the techniques of egg freezing by vitrification, it is now possible to preserve women’s eggs to maintain their current characteristics in anticipation of the time when you wish to use them.
This technique has two main applications:
For medical reasons
Certain treatments can irreversibly affect the fertility of a woman’s eggs. The physician should consider whether it is appropriate to apply this technique.
There are several diseases that can compromise a woman’s reproductive future: neo-plastic processes, endometriosis, autoimmune diseases or even surgery for benign problems that could decrease one’s reproductive capacity and therefore make it difficult or impossible, to have a child in the future.
The treatments for these diseases are evolving significantly, resulting in a higher patient cure rate.
Neoplasms usually develop later in life although their prevalence in childhood, adolescence and young adulthood is not negligible. For women of childbearing age or who are at pre-fertile age, the treatments needed to cure disease (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or some immunosuppressive treatments), can reduce, or even eliminate, their ability to get pregnant in the future.
When a woman is given a diagnosis of this kind, the first thing she thinks about is to get better, but health professionals must keep in mind that when these women get over their health problem, they will most likely want to have children.
The ovary is a sensitive organ that can be damaged by some drug treatments, especially those used in oncology. Its ability to ovulate properly may be disrupted and / or the eggs which it houses may have lost their suitability to develop a healthy embryo.
The various medical societies have published guidelines for action in these diseases. Indeed, one of the recommendations is to explain to the patient the possibilities that exist today of preserving their fertility.
One of the most tried and tested techniques of fertility preservation is egg freezing by vitrification. This allows that, once the disease has been overcome, the woman can achieve pregnancy with her own eggs.
This process is to stimulate the development of multiple follicles in order that, under anaesthetic sedation and aspiration we obtain some eggs, which are vitrified and kept unchanged until the woman completes the treatment for her disease and wants to have a child.
In cases of women over the age of 40, a personalized assessment should be made. The patient should seek medical advice and obtain clear information throughout, in accordance with her age and ovarian reserve.
Drug treatments for ovarian stimulation adapt to every case, as in breast cancer, where the protocols reduce to a minimum the level of estrogen.
In such cases it is important to act fast. At EUGIN, we are fully aware of this and we have a specially designed protocol so that the preservation of fertility does not delay the start of treatment.
For social reasons
Fertility decreases naturally with age. Currently, egg freezing can halt your gradual loss of reproductive capacity. EUGIN Clinic has a specific service, which can be consulted on Timefreeze
